What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a condition caused by a build-up of lymphatic fluid, leading to swelling—most commonly in the arms or legs. It occurs when the lymphatic system, a network of vessels and nodes that normally drain fluid back into the bloodstream, becomes damaged or impaired.

Early Signs & Risk Reduction

Lymphoedema often begins before any visible swelling appears. Early symptoms can include a feeling of heaviness, aching, tingling, or tightness in the affected area. Recognising these early signs is critical—because the sooner treatment begins, the better the long-term outcome.

At Occupational Therapy With Helen, we focus on proactive care. By identifying personal risk factors and implementing early strategies like compression garments and education, we can slow progression, reduce symptoms, and maintain function.

What to Expect From Your Consult:

  • Assessment & Monitoring
Circumferential limb measurements and volumetric calculation to track fluid changes

  • Skin Care Education
Strategies to keep your skin healthy and prevent infection or breakdown

  • Self-Massage Techniques
Learn how to stimulate lymph flow between sessions

  • Trigger Awareness & Risk Management
Identify personal risk factors and daily habits that impact swelling

Optional Treatments:
  • Compression Garment Prescription & Fitting
A tailored approach to finding the right garment—and learning how to apply it

  • Garment Donning/Doffing Equipment
Tools and techniques to make everyday use easier

  • Vacuum Therapy (Endermologie®)
A non-invasive mechanical massage to stimulate superficial lymphatic circulation

  • Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (LymphFlow Advance)
Mimics manual drainage to improve fluid flow and reduce swelling

  • Scar and Cording Management
Targeted silicone gel and vacuum massage therapies to treat scar tissue and reduce tightness

📍 Early intervention gives you the best chance of limiting progression and maintaining freedom of movement.

Complex Lymphatic Therapy (CLT)

For those already diagnosed with lymphoedema—whether in the upper limb, lower limb, breast, head, or neck—Complex Lymphatic Therapy offers a structured, phased approach to reduce swelling and maintain results.

CLT Includes:
  • Phase I: Intensive Phase
Aims to reduce swelling and decongest the limb

  • Phase II: Maintenance Phase
Focuses on sustaining improvements and preventing recurrence

Treatment Options:
  • Manual lymphatic drainage techniques

  • Vacuum Therapy using Endermologie® for more targeted and efficient drainage

  • Compression bandaging, adjustable wraps, and custom garments

  • Skin care to prevent complications

  • Monitoring via measurements and ongoing review

  • Combination therapies: LymphFlow Advance, Endermologie®, silicone gel for scars

CLT not only reduces volume and discomfort, but also improves mobility, quality of life, and reduces the risk of infection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding Lymphoedema: What You Need to Know

What causes lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system is unable to effectively drain fluid, leading to swelling in the tissues. This can happen for different reasons and is classified into two main types:

  • Primary lymphoedema: A rare, often inherited condition caused by abnormal development of the lymphatic vessels. Symptoms may not appear until adolescence or adulthood.

  • Secondary lymphoedema: Caused by damage to the lymphatic system. Common triggers include surgery, radiation therapy, recurrent infections (such as cellulitis), trauma, or cancer treatment.

Who is most at risk of developing lymphoedema?

You may be at increased risk if you have experienced:

  • Lymph node surgery or removal

  • Radiation therapy

  • Chemotherapy

  • Recurrent infections or cellulitis

  • Traumatic injury or surgery affecting the lymphatic system

Being overweight or obese can also raise your risk of developing lymphoedema.

What are the symptoms of lymphoedema?

The most common symptom is persistent swelling, often in the arms, legs, hands, feet, or other affected areas. Other symptoms can include:

  • A feeling of heaviness or tightness

  • Discomfort or pain

  • Skin changes or thickening (fibrosis)

  • Recurring infections

In more advanced cases, swelling can become severe and affect mobility and daily function.

How is lymphoedema treated?

While lymphoedema is not curable, it is very manageable with appropriate, ongoing care. Treatment options at Occupational Therapy With Helen include:

  • Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)

  • Compression therapy (bandaging, garments, wraps)

  • Intermittent pneumatic compression (LymphFlow Advance)

  • Endermologie® vacuum therapy

  • Skin care and education

  • Self-massage training and daily management strategies

Is lymphoedema curable?

There is currently no cure for lymphoedema. However, early diagnosis and a personalised treatment plan can significantly reduce symptoms, prevent progression, and improve your quality of life. With the right approach, many people manage their condition very effectively.

Do I need a referral for treatment?

A referral is not required to access treatment at Occupational Therapy With Helen. However, referrals from your GP or specialist are always welcome and can help support coordinated care. If you’re unsure, speak with your healthcare provider or contact me directly to discuss your options.
